The members of the German Council of Economic Experts have appointed unanimously Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Lars P. Feld as its new chairman with immediate effect. Lars P. Feld takes over as chairman from Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Christoph M. Schmidt, who retired from the German Council of Economic Experts on February 29, 2020 after the end of the appointment period.
Lars P. Feld is Professor of Economic Policy and Regulatory Economics at the University of Freiburg and Director of the Walter Eucken Institute. He has been a member of the German Council of Economic Experts since March 2011, where he is particularly concerned with financial and social policy. His main research interests are economic policy, finance, new political economy and economic analysis of law.
The German Council of Economic Experts is an independent academic body advising German policymakers on questions of economic policy. It was founded in 1963, and generally consists of five members. Until two new members are appointed by the Federal Government, the current three members are: Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Lars P. Feld, Prof. Dr. Achim Truger and Prof. Volker Wieland, Ph.D. According to the Act on the Appointment of a Council of Economic Experts, the chairman of the German Council of Economic Experts is elected for a period of three years in accordance with §8.
